Stand Out at Interview: The Smart Way to Answer “Why Do You Want to Join Us?” - With An Example

If you’ve ever sat across from an interviewer and been asked, “So, why do you want to join us?” only to feel your brain scramble for a polished answer, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions in tax interviews—and one of the easiest to fumble.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t just a throwaway question. It’s the employer trying to get to the heart of three very specific things:

  1. Do you actually want this job—or just any job?

  2. Have you done your homework on us?

  3. Can you clearly articulate the value you’ll bring?

Why It Appeals – Show Genuine Interest, Not Generic Enthusiasm

It’s tempting to respond with a version of, “It’s a great opportunity with a well-respected firm,” but that’s something you could say to any employer. To really stand out, get specific about why this particular role excites you. Is it the scope of advisory work? Exposure to a certain client base? The team structure?

Example:

“What really appeals to me about this role is the opportunity to shape and lead a growing corporate tax team within a firm that’s clearly ambitious about its next phase of development. I’ve always enjoyed the technical side of tax, but what motivates me most at this stage is building capability — developing people, deepening client relationships, and creating a team that delivers consistently high-quality, commercial advice."

What You Can Offer – Be Specific and Relevant

This is your chance to connect the dots between their needs and your skills. Think about what you bring to the table, and don’t be afraid to highlight your wins.

Example:

"Over the last eight years, I’ve led corporate tax delivery for a portfolio of mid-market and privately owned businesses, many of which were navigating complex growth events — acquisitions, restructuring, succession planning. I’ve built and mentored high-performing teams, helped develop new service lines, and played a key role in winning and expanding client accounts. I believe that blend of technical depth, commercial acumen, and people leadership aligns well with what you’re looking for in this role."

Why This Business – Show You’ve Thought It Through

The unspoken question behind “Why do you want to join?” is actually, “Why us?” This is where research goes a long way. Mention something that proves you’ve paid attention: growth plans, leadership changes, service areas, culture, or recent client wins.

Example:

"What’s drawn me specifically to your firm is your clear investment in long-term growth — not just through headcount, but in how you’re building leadership capacity, expanding service capability, and positioning the firm in the market. The recent senior hires and your strategic focus on owner-managed and privately held businesses tell me this is a firm where someone in my position could have real impact, and contribute to the wider direction — not just the tax team, but the firm as a whole.”

Final Tip: Think Ahead

Frame your answer around where you want to go, not just where you are now. Employers love to hear that your next move is intentional. So rather than just saying why you’re leaving your current role, focus on why you’re choosing this one.

Remember: A well-crafted answer to “Why do you want to join?” isn’t just about impressing your interviewer—it’s about showing them you’ve already pictured yourself as part of the team.

The example above is generic and would need you to personalise it.
